The morning I wore what I wanted—and the Universe affirmed it.
Let me tell you what happened.
A couple of mornings ago, I sat in my car at the trailhead for my 5-mile morning walk wearing a crop top and biker short set I’ve owned for years. Nothing fancy, just something I used to wear when I was younger, but can still fit in.
I paused. Looked at my reflection in my car window, And the old questions crept in: “Should I wear something over this?” Is this too much for my age?Am I doing the most?
And then I thought: It’s already 80 degrees in Texas at 6 a.m. Few people are out here. And men walk shirtless all the time without thinking twice regardless of their physique. Why should I shrink? And really, who cares?
So, I got out. Midriff bare. Shoulders back. Head held high. Still a little self conscious, but proud of myself for wearing what felt right for me.
The Very Next Morning…
I was walking the trail again, and a woman a stranger to me, stopped mid-stride and said:
“Excuse me… I saw you walking yesterday in your crop top, and I just thought, my God, she is so fit. She looks amazing. I had to stop and tell you that.”
I smiled. “Thank you. I’m not bragging, this is a testimony, I’m 65.”
She paused, looking stunned. “I was so curious. You look incredible.”
And then I shared my other truth with her: “I actually hesitated to wear that outfit yesterday. Almost put something over it.”
She looked me dead in the eye and said, “No, you don’t. You wear your crop tops. You show that body. Because you look amazing.”
It Wasn’t About the Compliment. It was about the confirmation. The little nudge from the Universe saying: You did right to choose yourself. That crop top? It wasn’t about vanity. It was about liberation.
It took courage to show up uncovered, not just in body, but in confidence. And on the day I felt most uncertain… the Universe sent someone to affirm that my visibility was not too much.
It was perfectly timed.

For the little girl who once hated her reflection.
For the woman who hid her softness to feel safe.
And for every Black woman who wonders if she has the right to show up fully – in her beauty, her skin, her freedom.
